Drawing

Drawing is an art form wherein we create two dimensional figures on any surface using painting tool. BA Fine Art Drawing graduates have had success working as part of collectives, showing in gallery and museum exhibitions and gaining prestigious residencies in places such as Frieze Art Fair, Venice Biennale, Palais de Tokyo, Skowhegan and Kolla Festival Luxembourg.
This long-overdue exhibition will include examples of preparatory studies and ideas for sculpture, prints, studies and copies of works by artists Moore admired (from Picasso to El Greco, Rembrandt and the French Impressionists), studies of the human figure, animals, the landscape and the weather, portraits, designs for textiles and magazine covers, and a large representation of Moore's more famous drawings - the two series in which he chronicled wartime Britain.

Well-known pencil drawings by famous artists include the Portrait of Mme Guillaume Guillon” by Jean-Auguste Ingres, Trees and a Stretch of Water on the Stour” (1832-1836) by John Constable (who also used a sepia wash in this expressionistic work), a sketched portrait of Alice Meynell” (1894) by John Singer Sargent, Drawing Hands” (1948) by Maurits Cornelis Escher.
Another more pictorially oriented phase followed, culminating in the late 19th century work of artists like Aubrey Beardsley (1872-98) who applied the direct black-white contrast to planes, while in the 20th century the French masters Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Picasso reduced the object to a mere line without any depth or other spatial illusion.

This defeatism still holds fast in some place, despite a century of ice-breaking modern art, and every kind of drawing from the mescaline-driven hallucinations of Henri Michaux to the fine lines of an Agnes Martin grid Picasso's famous remark, adapted - that it took him only four years to draw like Raphael, but a lifetime to draw like a child - used to be everywhere quoted as a call to break free of academic tradition: no more drawing from plaster casts of Roman sculptures.
If you enjoy drawing and would like to own original works to inspire you, or if you're an art lover who'd like to feature one or a collection of drawings in a room, we're confident that you'll find works you love within our vast selection of original fine art drawings for sale from around the world.
Leonardo was noted for the particularly precise stroke of his scientific drawings; Raphael produced more regular, graceful sketches, while Michelangelo drew with short strokes reminiscent of chisel work; Titian used intricate hatching to denote light and dark, while among the Northern Renaissance artists , Durer mastered all the possibilities of pen drawing, from a purely graphic, delineatory approach to a spatial and plastic modelling technique.

Drawings can be produced using a wide variety of drawing instruments, including pen and ink, charcoal, chalks, pastels, metalpoint, Drawing silverpoint, graphite point, coloured crayons, as well as graver, burin or etching needle for incised types of drawing.
Once accepted into the BFA program, students will be expected to develop technical proficiency in their media, engage in a critical dialog with their peers, investigate the conceptual underpinning of their own ideas and interests, and work closely with the full-time faculty.
