Couples Therapy & Counseling

MyTherapyNYC is a mental health group practice that offers counseling to individuals and couples in the Flatiron neighborhood of New York City. Integrative therapy may include some combination of the following: meditation support, mindfulness, breathing techniques, stress response training, guided imagery, somatic psychotherapy, Focusing, Brainspotting and EMDR therapy to help clients strengthen inner resources and develop self-soothing techniques with the goal of developing a healthier life-balance.
Conflicts usually do not resolve themselves; marriage counseling will provide an opportunity to hear and understand your partner, to take in their way of seeing things in a new and different way and maybe develop tolerance or empathy about your differences that may not be possible if you try to do it alone.

My focus is on the current obstacles to emotional intimacy and how past relationship experiences and personal histories interfere with it. In my work with couples, I am careful to listen closely to each partner as they share their perspectives on the relationship.
Online video counseling or telehealth is a good fit if you are a busy New Yorker or professional who benefits from therapy, but you may not be able to consistently commit to a regular, ongoing session time, or, you simply can't take hours out of your already hectic day to commute to a therapy suite.

At Marriage Couples Counseling in New York City, we utilize Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) to bring about seven important conversations for you and your partner described by Sue Johnson in her book, Hold Me Tight Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy ties in our earliest attachments from childhood to the present-day with how we work function in our interpersonal and romantic relationships as adults.
Our therapists are committed to your growth and development, and aim to fulfill your therapeutic goals by helping you strengthen your emotional well-being, improve your interpersonal relationships, gain insight and understanding around your triggers and reactions, and implement the necessary tools for you to be in control of your life.
Psychotherapy can help validate the patient's experience, work through any feelings of shame and confusion that may have been internalized, process the traumatic experience or event and help them understand how their current life is impacted by traumatic experiences.

With a wealth of experience in finding real and lasting solutions for couples from across New York City, Robin Bryant, PH.D. developed a reputation for offering an impartial yet effective middle ground for couples who are unable to communicate properly.
What makes this different from psychotherapy is that the experience is limited, usually one or two sessions, sometimes more, and is not meant to replace ongoing therapy, therefore, a consultation is a proactive and preventative approach to getting help for navigating a crisis, transition or life-challenge.
People come to therapy for disturbed mood (such as anger, anxiety, panic and depression), family conflicts, behavioral disturbances divorce recovery and acting out unhealthy behaviors, relationship conflicts, social problems, career issues, sex issues, anger management and more.

In good couples therapy, the question of whether or not both people in the relationship are committed to continue has to be discussed, however uncomfortable that may be. While a couples therapist won't tell you what to do, if there's uncertainty we can help explore the viability of the relationship as one that can meet everyone's needs in the present and down the line as a growthful , sustaining relationship.
